Amarina Waters - Your Mother's Ring
Melbourne indie-folk fixture Amarina Waters has just dropped the second single 'Your Mother's Ring' from what promises to be a captivating debut album, and Trouble Juice are delighted to premiere it today.
Falling in and out of love is a prerequisite for any notable indie-folk singer to reminisce about, and thankfully, Amarina Waters doesn’t upset tradition with her new single ‘Your Mother’s Ring’. The second song to come from her forthcoming debut album, Waters was lucky enough to record this in New Zealand with producer Ben Edwards, whose catalogue of work shows he was perfectly suited to oversee Waters’ sound. Edwards has previously worked with Nadia Reid, Aldous Harding, and Julia Jacklin, each name sharing similar stylistic characteristics to Waters. In fact, there are shades of the aforementioned Jacklin’s song ‘Comfort’ in this single’s representation of lost but remembered love, albeit Jacklin’s is a more melancholic effort.
Waters has said that the song is about her memories of first being in love, whilst she was living an idyllic country life at her boyfriend’s mum’s farm in the Great Alpine region of Victoria. The ring in question came into Waters’ possession years after they ultimately broke up, a token of goodwill given by her former partner’s mum to keep the singer safe on her travels.
This is a pure indie-folk lullaby, in the vein of Laura Marling (there’s even something remarkably similar about their startlingly blonde appearances). Her vocal is always crisp, delivered wryly but with purpose. She is a clear romantic - as good folk singers usually are - but there’s a winning humour present at all times.
The fact that, as the song says, Waters does “still wear your mother’s ring”, resonates as a playful paean to hope and of never letting the imperfections of a failed relationship hinder the memories of the nicer times contained within it. It's a stunning return, and with her debut album on the way, is one that seems to suggest plenty more impressive things are just around the corner.
