Imogen Cygler - Earth
Imogen Cygler - Earth
Now that it’s almost a year old, Imogen Cygler’s entrancing art-pop ballad ‘Earth’ has been reinvigorated with a spellbinding new film clip that balances the song’s subtle beauty and haunting anxiety perfectly.
Featured on her 2019 EP Wrocław, ‘Earth’ is a stunning example of Imogen’s immaculate art-pop craft, embedded with an illusive classical influence and a cunning eye for detail. While a sweet folk-pop melody draws you in at first, ‘Earth’ quickly develops into an avalanche of lush strings and cascading production, spiralling around Imogen’s sweet, almost whimsical vocals.
With the accompaniment of an evocative new clip today, all of the beauty and complexities that Imogen’s haunting, simplistic lyrics hint at throughout ‘Earth’ are enhanced tenfold, while also highlighting the unsettling undertones that the track is laced with. The result is a striking and mesmerising visual support that fits ‘Earth’ like a hand to a glove.
While the clip appears to be as meditative and considered as the track, both Imogen and filmmaker Michael Ridley explain the shoot was far more spontaneous and organic in its creation, revealing a subtle fluidity to the clip on a rewatch.
As Mike explains, “it was definitely the most impromptu shoot I'd ever done, having only met Imogen for the first time the night before, and discussing ideas for what to shoot the next day. We had a 14 hour day in a studio bouncing ideas and trying things, which was such a refreshing way to approach shooting a clip.” Imogen shares this same sentiment, as she elaborates “the shoot for ‘Earth’ with Mike, Rory and Claire was a whirlwind experience. I remember getting home after and feeling like I’d had the most special day. Having only met them the night before, it was such a surreal experience - watching them work as a collaborative team was truly an honour.”
