Blake Scott - Fever
Words by Francis Tait
Wednesday 19th August, 2020
To accompany the announcement of Blake Scott’s forthcoming solo debut Niscitam, out in October through Wing Sing Records, we have the almighty privilege of premiering first single ‘Fever’ - an unsettling, unshakable return from the sharp-tongued vocalist of The Peep Tempel that cements his place as one of Australia’s most cunning, idiosyncratic songwriters.
Thematically wrestling with Australia’s relationship with drinking and alcoholism, ‘Fever’ is a bold example of the crafty songwriting and incomparable lyricism that Blake Scott has been sculpting for the better part of the last decade.

Within the first few seconds of ‘Fever’, Blake’s distinctive spat vocal and pointed use of words have you grabbed by the front of the shirt, making sure we’re not getting too comfortable as waves of manic guitar tangle around his voice, over a simmering rhythm section. As the chorus is introduced with the exclamation of “I’ve got a fever”, we’re hit with a wiry guitar lead that snakes around the stark vocal hook, instilling the track with an almost sleazy undercurrent while the pulsating groove settles into a swagger. Laced with plenty of the dry wit that we’d expect from The Peep Tempel frontman - with lines like “it’s getting real fucking prickly in here” and “I’m like a pig in shit, in the land of the living sun” - combined with Scott’s unnerving delivery, there’s an disarming atmosphere to ‘Fever’ that places us right in the palm of his hand. Before the track abruptly wraps up and we’re left resigned to the fact that we’ll be singing it for the rest of the day.

‘Fever’ marks the first release from Blake Scott since The Peep Tempel released their third album Joy in 2016 and called it quits shortly after, and is the first taste of a new album Niscitam, which we’ll have to wait until October 9th for. Despite it being a while between (dare I say) drinks, ‘Fever’ is Blake Scott at his mesmerising best, and it has me counting down the days until I can have more of his thrillingly agitated music washed over me - not unlike a pig in shit.

Catch 'Fever' above and keep an eye on Blake Scott and wingsing.co for more info on Niscitam, out Friday October 9th.
