Premiere:
Ooh La La! - Postcard From Heaven
Words by James Lynch
Friday 22nd July, 2022
Today we have the pleasure of premiering Postcard From Heaven, the evocative and ethereal debut album from local noise-maker Ooh La La!.
The last time TJ heard from Ooh La La! was alongside the release of "Soft Intervention”, their debut EP that was created to set the stage for their forthcoming full-length album. That said album, Postcard From Heaven, has finally arrived and as expected, it’s an equally affecting listen, developed across 13 experimental instrumentals and imaginative sound collages that highlight the expansive and unpredictable scope of the project.

In the press release accompanying the album’s release, we’re told that “Postcard From Heaven is the loose documentation of nature and the human psyche around it”, and that “this record implies the essence of insignificance”. Across the listen, there is an undeniable sense of the fleetingness of each moment, as every tinkering track blurs past us into the next, each capturing a specific and illusive point in time. There’s an intimacy to these tracks, as if we might blink and miss them, but similarly there’s a vastness; the scope of every hazy, fluid soundscape evoking an impression of all the lost sounds currently whirring away around us. Try hard enough and you could probably convince yourself Ooh La La! have re-imagined the sound of the world turning.

It’s a transportive listen but one that’s simultaneously grounding, one that encourages us to pay attention to the finer details of life while also enticing us to shut our eyes and drift away with it all.

Postcard From Heaven is out today via Mabui Music - head to mabuimusic.bandcamp.com to purchase a limited edition cassette.
