New party-starters on the block Tommy & Roy are back today with ‘High On Nightmares’, a second dose of their addictive electronic-pop that pulls us deeper into their enigmatic world.
From the initial moment that Tommy & Roy sauntered into the Trouble Juice inbox, it’s been almost impossible to make sense of the duo. A brand new project led by two elusive heads of the Melbourne music scene, the pair cite Britney Spears, Daft Punk and Uffie as influences, and tell us that they’re “forced to transmute the sonic data from these artists into new music” via a process that causes them “immense agony”. Their tongues are firmly in cheek, but the twist here is that their take on overblown and sugary dance-pop is no laughing matter.

Following on from their hyper-active debut single ‘Sedated’, new track ‘High On Nightmares’ is a little more hypnotic and effortlessly cool. After opening with a swirl of gleaming synths and a bubbling programmed beats, ‘High On Nightmares’ expands into a disco-tinged groover - with its slower tempo, it’s a track that cleverly lures you towards the dancefloor, while simultaneously serving up an undeniable rush as the group stack one contagious hook on top of the other.

Speaking about the track, the duo share the song “describes a platonic love and appreciation for a friend who is fun to be around when they have partied too hard”. It’s fitting that in this instance, Tommy & Roy feel like that friend; despite how fried they might sound, the colour and charisma that comes bursting from the project is palpable.

'High On Nightmares' is out today in all the usual places.
